Psalm 137 is one of the most difficult passages of scripture in the bible. The Psalmist refuses to give any easy answers about the topic of justice. I pitched our lead pastor a film that would accompany his message, a story that would open up the minds of the congregation to contemplate the difficult question of what to do with our enemies.
When I pitched the idea of a film to the Lead Pastor, he told me that if we created something, it would need to be open ended, unresolved. I was moved by the theme of exile in Psalm 137, and wondered how we might bring the plight of the Jewish people in the Psalm to a more modern context. I came back to him with a script about a father suffering loss at the hands of the Nazis during the Holocaust.
